At 2pm on Thursday, when the election of Kenyan nominees to the East African Legislative Assembly (Eala) was going on in Parliament, Godfrey Mwangi Maina Karobia was in downtown Nairobi’s River Road running his errands unperturbed.

Maina Karobia was going about his business in Nairobi’s River Road area when his phone started ringing incessantly.

The calls were coming from Parliament, where his name was on the list of those being voted to represent Kenya in the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA). He was vying under the ruling Kenya Kwanza umbrella.
